The greatest Christmas pageant ever? Probably not...but we got through another Christmas program! :0) We did the basic Nativity this year, with the kids acting it out as one of our Teens read the "story". The program went MUCH better than the practices! :0) But they usually always do... Our focus this year was on the fact that since Jesus came to earth, and gave us the gift of Salvation, the least we can do is give Him our heart.

Christmas Program 2010

Christmas is a busy time for everyone. It seems every year gets busier and more hectic than the last! Since we are the Pastor and wife, most of our Christmas activities revolve around the Church. This year is a little different than usual since Christmas is actually on a Sunday. Normally we are up North with family for the Holiday, but this year we will be at home for once on Christmas day!

This Sunday, December 18th, is our Children's Christmas program in the morning service. They will be presenting the Nativity in costume while one of our teenagers is reading the story. We have been working on the details for a while now, and will be glad when that part of the Christmas season is over! :0) On Christmas Day, the Church decided to go ahead and have all of our services. We will be having Sunday School, Morning Worship, and a Candlelight Service in the evening. Also, that day we will be having our Church Christmas Dinner at the Parsonage.

Activities outside of the Church, involve spending time with family, exchanging gifts, eating, and enjoying being together! On my husband's side of the family, we will be attending a big extended family Christmas party on the 26th. Every year they get together at a hall, decorate it all up, and eat together. On my side of the family, we will be getting together will all of our clan, and pretty much doing the same thing! :0) We get to eat lots of goodies around the Holidays since we see both sides of the family!

Overall, being with family is the highlight of our Christmas activities. What about you?

How We Christmas Shop

Ever hear the phrase, "shop til you drop"? Well, that's not me...I am probably totally unusual in this area...but what's new right? :0) Shopping is not one of my favorite things, but I do like to get something special for family members at Christmas time. However, due to the size of our family (uh...by size I mean the number of members), we are not able to buy for everyone anymore. Our main focus is usually on the niece and nephews! Kids are so much fun to buy for that it is hard for me not to spoil them! :0)

Unlike probably most of you, not even the prospect of getting a fantastic gift for the kiddos can entice me to go shopping on Black Friday! I absolutely DETEST big crowds and long lines; so I generally do my shopping little bits at a time. I usually have a good idea of what I'm looking for before heading into the store, so none of this aimless, up-and-down-every-aisle shopping for me! (I TOLD you I'm not a shopper...) I go in, check for the best deal on the item I'm looking for, check out, and I'm out of there!

Maybe you think I'm a wet blanket...and maybe you're right. However, to me, the best part of Christmas is not the presents, it's spending time with my family. So, I suppose that is where I put my focus at Christmas time...sorry to disappoint you all! :0) Happy Shopping!

How We Decorate for Christmas

I usually decorate for Christmas a little earlier than most people. I like to have it up in time so we can enjoy it, because after Christmas is over it's just not as much fun anymore! :0) So our decorations were up the week before Thanksgiving this year... Partly because we travel to see family the week of Thanksgiving, so putting them up the day after is not usually an option for us. Anyhow, as with my fall decorations, most of our Christmas decorations have been given to me over the years as gifts. The tree, however, is special to me because it was my Grandma's tree that I received after she passed away. Since I also have her living room furniture, it seemed fitting to leave the decorations the same color (and several of the very same ornaments she used). As a result, our tree is done in Silver, White and Pink. I do like to collect Snowmen so I have a few pieces that were given to me that I enjoy putting out each year. My dream is to someday have one of those little lit up Christmas villages to add to my decor. However, since they are a bit out of our price range right now, we just made do with some of the smaller pieces I found for cheap. :0) As far as outside decorating goes...I usually like to do the garland on my banisters entwined with white lights, wreaths, and swags under my front windows. However, this year was a little different since we're expecting our first child, I decided just to do things a little more simple. I still hung a wreath or two and put the swags under the windows, but no garland or lights this year for our house. Sometimes though...simple is better. :0)

How We Celebrate Thanksgiving

Since we live so far away from family, we never celebrate any holiday in our own home. However, SINCE we're alone most of the year, we enjoy this time away surrounded by our favorite people! :0) Our Celebration varies from year to year as to the actual events, however there is ALWAYS a common denominator: The BIG Thanksgiving meal! We, like most families, have our favorites that HAVE to be a part of the Thanksgiving dinner each year. For example, my mom makes the BEST Sweet Potato Casserole; my sister usually brings her delectable Cranberry Salad (not your typical stuff...); and since I am the Pumpkin lover of the family,my contribution usually is a Pumpkin Cheesecake or some other dessert made of that wonderful "orange stuff". Of course, that is not ALL that we eat, but those are some of the dishes that make things so extra special.

When it is the year to have Thanksgiving at my in-laws, things are done a little differently. We usually have the meal at my husband's Aunts house where there is enough food prepared and brought in to feed the neighborhood (and in fact, HAS been shared once the festivities were over)! I'll never forget my first Thanksgiving there...his aunt (always afraid there won't be enough food) prepared 3 whole Turkeys, AND a ham, just in case someone didn't care for Turkey... Needless to say, nobody went hungry that year... :0)

After stuffing ourselves silly, we spend time together laughing, sharing, and playing games. This is the main thing that I'm thankful for at this time of year- spending time together with the people I love most, my family!

Today my Grandpa Hunt turns 89 years old!! Wow how time flies! He has always been a fun part of my life and I will always be thankful for the beautiful example of Holiness that his life has been. Happy Birthday Grandpa, and wishing you MANY more!! :0)

Goodbye Irene!

We had some excitement not too long ago when Hurricane Irene whipped through our area! Leaving in her wake uprooted trees, downed power lines, and a bunch of inconvenienced people! We were without power for 5 days, which was too long for me, but shorter than the last time a major hurricane hit this area. My in-laws kindly rescued us, and brought down a generator and a chainsaw. We we're thrilled with the generator and were SO excited at the thought of getting a real shower again, until we realized we couldn't have both power AND water since our water source comes from the church. So...Dad LaVan got inventive, and rigged an old push lawn mower found in the woods as a make-shift transport to get the generator up to the church so we could have a shower! :0) Even though it was in the dark (and quite chilly!), it was the best shower we have ever had in our lives! :0)

Our property didn't have a lot of major damage but we did have some trees uprooted or fallen, and a few shingles fly away. My father-in-law and Luke worked hard getting the trees cut down and piled up to burn. We certainly had a time of rejoicing when our power came back on! :0)

As promised...pictures of our summer Vacation Bible Schools! These were from the first one we did in June at the Barberton Bible Holiness Church--my home church!

Summer Highlights

It's been FOREVER since I've posted on here, but rest assured, I'm still here! :0) This summer has been one wild ride, and we have been so incredibly busy that my dear blog has had to go by the wayside...however, now that summer is over MAYBE I will once again have the time to keep my blogger friends up-to-date with our crazy life! :0)

As I mentioned in my last post, most of our summer has been occupied with Vacation Bible Schools. We started off the summer by doing my home church (Barberton Bible Holiness) in June, and had a wonderful group of kiddos there. We always enjoy doing their VBS and are SO THANKFUL for all the wonderful helpers that always pitch in wherever they're needed! Those helpers include my wonderful parents who pitched in right along side us; playing the piano, getting involved in the puppet show, encouraging us, and providing a place for us to stay while there! Made us feel right at home! ;0)

Next was my hubby's home church (Indiana Wesleyan Methodist). This was the first year we have done a VBS for them there so that was an interesting experience for both of us I'm sure! :0) Thank you to my in-laws for letting us camp out at their house that week too! :0) Always nice to be "at home" while away from home! Also, we so appreciate their Pastor (Rev. Joe Smith) and wife.

August was a whirlwind month... We started off the month by doing the children services for the Bible Holiness Church family camp in St. Mary's, Ohio. We had a good group of kids to work with there and were thrilled at the great job they did for the program! And...might I add... a SPECIAL thank you to a lady from my home church, Susie, for all the help building, painting, and transporting our props for us this year!! There is no doubt that we couldn't have done this without her help!!!

The following week found us at our conference camp meeting in Stoneboro, Pa. Camp meeting is always a busy time for us as we try to pitch in and help out with some odd jobs around the grounds.

When we arrived home from our camp meeting, we had our churches VBS! By this time, I will admit, we were a little weary in well-doing... However, the Lord helped us once again to deliver the message of "Living the Sweet Life" with Jesus. We we're also excited to see a few new faces among our regular attenders! Normally, we would have ended our VBS with a Program that Sunday morning. However, nature had other things in store for us and we had a Hurricane instead which knocked out our power for 5 days! What a way to "end" our summer! :0) Aren't you glad that our Father in Heaven knows what lies ahead for us and will take us through if we just keep our little hand in his?

Living the Sweet Life

We did complete our first of four Vacation Bible Schools this past month (June). I will be posting pictures at the end of the Summer from each of the Bible Schools; but didn't want to post them until they were all complete since we're using the same theme for all of them. Our theme this year is "Living the Sweet Life" using candy and Candy Land to get across the message that Jesus can make us and KEEP us sweet!! Here's a hint... I used the Candy bars: Butterfinger, Sweet Tarts, Mr GoodBar, Almond Joy & Pay Day. More info will follow at the end of the Summer but just wanted to let you all know what we are up to this summer!

Around Christmas time, the LaVan side of our family had a family photo taken. We never did get a good one of the Davis Clan since it's hard to get us all together at once. So... recently the opportunity arose for all of us to be together at once! Very unusual with our growing brood, so we took advantage of it and FINALLY got our picture together! :0) As you will notice, we have a new addition to our family! Elizabeth Whitaker will soon be an "official" part of the Davis clan when she and Jerry get married in October! :0) We're looking forward to having her in our family, and already feel as if she has been one of us forever.

For our Spring Revival this year, my parents came and did the preaching and singing. We had a good revival. While they were here we also took advantage of the rare time together to see some of the local sights. We visited Lester Manor and Bass Pro Shop among all the regular places.

Three Years ago today, I married my best friend and the love of my life. Now, three years later, we are STILL best friends and more in love than ever! :0) We are looking forward to many more years together if the Lord tarries! In the meantime, we will continue to labor for Him together in this Journey we call Life. It truly is as the song says, "Sweeter as the Years go by!"

An Unexpected Blessing

Since my parents and us are both in the ministry, we rarely get to celebrate holidays such as Mother's Day together since we both are needed at our respective churches. This year was no exception, however, we did get to see our mothers around Mother's Day this year. My home church in Barberton, Ohio has a Mother Daughter Banquet every year. Usually it is on the friday night before Mother's Day, but this year due to scheduling they had it on the monday after. This made it possible for me to attend it with my mom, sister and niece. Unfortunately, part of the deal was that I do the Devotional for the evening... :0) In spite of that, we enjoyed attending one together for the first time in years!

As a surprise to our mom we sang a song entitled, "To Know Your Jesus Too". We roped our brother into singing it with us... :0)

A Merry Mother's Day!

Today is Mother's Day...the day we celebrate the women who made us who we are today. The women who have loved us, nurtured us, sacrificed for us, taught us, given to us; and have lived by example before us. These women are our hero's. Through all of our lives they have given of themselves so that we could have. Many times these women are taken for granted, but I want to take the time today to say THANK YOU mom for all you have done, are doing, and are going to continue to do!! Love you!!

New Church Roof

This past week we had a new roof put onto our Church. A crew from up in Ohio came down and stayed with us a few days while they worked on the roof. We really appreciate all their hard work!! They did a FANTASTIC job and we can't thank them enough. We had lots of fun with them while they were here.

A very special girl

Today is the birthday of our one and only niece! She is our little princess and such a special girl to us. It's hard to believe that she is turning 9 years old today!! It seems like yesterday that I became an aunt for the very first time and the joy I felt as I held her in my arms. We love you Jessica!! Happy Birthday from Aunt Nana & Uncle Luke!

What a reason to celebrate!

What does Easter mean to you? Is it a time to get together with family and friends, have an Easter egg hunt, open up the Easter baskets, eat chocolate bunnies, sit on the Easter bunny's lap.....? Or is Easter the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ?

Sadly, for many in our world today, their Easter celebration consists of the first scenario. They tell their chidren that the Easter bunny left them this basket full of goodies and toys. What a twisted view of Easter! For the Christian, Easter should be one of the happiest times of celebration! The Savior is ALIVE! Christ's story doesn't end at the tomb. He triumphed over death and hell and rose again with victory! What an awesome thing to celebrate!!

This Easter let's concentrate on the REAL meaning of the season, and not allow the world's view to distort it. Celebrate our Risen Savior!!

April Teen Night

It was our privilege to have our Church teens over for a youth night on friday. We are working with a group of girls right now at this point in our Ministry so that has been exciting! :0) We pray that each one of them would come to know Jesus as their personal Savior. We recently started a new theme in Junior Church titled "Camping at Sinai" in which we are teaching the Ten Commandments. Sis Crystal Hodak is our Junior Church leader and the brains behind it all. Sis Kate and I just help set it all up and teach every 3rd week! What a blessing and a load off of my mind that has been!! We are all three back there every week with the children taking turns doing the memory verse, leading the singing, and teaching the lesson. Happiness That Money Cannot Buy

Many people believe that as long as they are rich they will always be happy. What a sad mistake. While it is possible for you to be happy and be rich at the same time; money does NOT buy happiness. Riches have the potential of tying one down to the things of this world, putting you in bondage to those things, and making you miserable. So what does bring true happiness?

True happiness is knowing the joy of Salvation. The words of this song by the Mark Trammel Trio says it so well... "Real happiness is following Jesus. Happiness is serving the Lord. Real happiness is knowing the joy of Salvation! And you'll never know real happiness 'til you know the Lord." There is a void inside of each one of us that can only be filled by Jesus Christ. He has designed us to NEED Him in order to be truly happy. It isn't a drudgery to serve Jesus and to do what pleases Him, because He fills us with a joy and a peace that we cannot find anywhere else. He makes it more that just "worth it" to serve Him!

Riches may last for a short time, but the joy that Jesus gives us will last for eternity. But let's not just hoard that joy and enjoy it for ourselves. We need to share it with the lost and dying world around us. They need to hear that Jesus can satisfy the longing in their soul and that He can give real joy and happiness. Let's determine to share Jesus with those we meet so that they too can have real happiness in serving the Lord.

Keeping the Clutter Out: Maintaining Clutter-Free Spaces

Clutter is a problem in every home all across America. We LOVE to hang onto our junk. We move it from room to room, stuff it under our beds, heap it in the garage, leave it laying around ANYTHING but get RID of it, right?! We say, 'why bother, it will just accumulate again!'. Well, let's look at some ways to maintain our clutter-free spaces so it won't accumulate again...

~Decide What is Really Needed:
If you haven't used it in a year, you probably don't NEED it, and it's time to get rid of it. Use that space more wisely. Keep this in mind, and when you see that item in the store that you really THINK you need; ask yourself if you have a space for it. If you've gone to the trouble of de-cluttering, you probably aren't going to want to do that on a regular basis and will decide it's worth it to maintain.

~Put Things Back:
When you use something, don't just toss it on the floor and leave the room. Make it a rule of thumb to always return things to their original place before going on to the next thing. If you do this all the time, you will avoid the overwhelming task of doing it later when it has had time to accumulate!

~25 Pick Up:
If things HAVE accumulated, here's a trick to take care of the problem quickly and easily. Grab an empty laundry basket and take it with you from room to room, filling it with all the items that don't belong in that room. Then as you go from room to room replace the items that belong in that particular room and continue on to the next room until your laundry basket is empty. Again, if you do this on a regular basis, you won't accumulate large amounts of items that tend to overwhelm you and make you give it up.

**The Biggest key to remember when maintaining a clutter-free space, is to keep on top of it or you will get snowed under!

Fitting It All In: Storage in Small Spaces

I'm NOT an expert when it comes to storing things in small spaces. However, I have had to learn a few tricks since living in my current home. We live in a ranch style home with no basement or garage. We do Vacation Bible Schools during the summer so we have quite a bit of 'extra' things to store besides just our own items we have acquired over time. We do have an attic, so I have learned to make use of that in storing the larger items that won't warp, melt or explode in the heat. But, for the rest of the items that WILL do those things if stored in our very warm attic, I have had to become a little creative in my storage ideas. Since we are a pastor and live in a parsonage where we frequently have overnight guests, I can't just stuff things under the beds or throw them in a heap into the extra guest rooms either. (Not that any of us ever do that I'm sure...)

But we have one bedroom that is an "extra" room right now that I have dubbed my "work room" for VBS material. Keeping in mind that this room also has to be able to be used as a guest room at a moments notice, I have utilized some "ordinary" means of storage in this room. As you see in the pictures above, I used the dresser as a means of a sort of 'filing cabinet' and storage bin. It's a great way of getting the "odds and ends" out of sight. It also makes it easy to organize things so that you know where they are when you are in a hurry.

Of course, you can't get along without using those WONDERFUL storage bins that they sell in every shape, color and size nowadays! But, don't just throw a bunch of odds and ends into them that will make it impossible for you to find it ever again. I try to put "like with like" or do it by themes (since I am using this for VBS storage). Then put a label (not permanent) on the outside so that when they are stacked you can easily see what is in each bin.

Learn to use EVERY available storage space in your home. By that I mean, look around and see if you have an empty crate, toy box, decorative bench with a cubby; ANYTHING that would work as a means of storage, BUT will get the item out of sight. For example, the room I use as my "work room" for VBS storage is decorated in a outdoor woodsy type of theme. As a part of the decoration, I have a wooden crate with a blanket that matches the decor tossed over it. But no one can see what's in the crate. So guess what?! It's a "hidden storage space"! I put small items in here that otherwise don't have a "home" and they're easy to get to whenever I need them! But I haven't ruined my decor, or cluttered up another closet; just utilized the empty space that was sitting vacant.

A Look Inside: Spiritual Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning is an activity that usually requires great effort on the part of the one who wants to see results. You can't expect a room to clean itself. YOU have to do the grunt work, right? It's the same way with our spiritual life. We can say we want to draw closer to the Lord, but are we willing to do some spiritual "spring cleaning" of our own in order for that to become reality? Someone once said, "You can have as much of God as you want". In other words, it's up to us to do the seeking and searching. In Jeremiah 29:13 it says, "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." You can't go half-heartedly into a room, move a few things around, rearrange some drawers, and stuff some junk under the bed, and wipe a rag over the furniture and say you did a deep spring cleaning. No, you might have made things look a bit better on the surface, but you didn't do a deep cleaning. THAT is the kind of cleaning that has lasting results. In order to see LASTING results in our spiritual walk with Christ, we must dig deep into His Word; and allow Him to dig deep into our lives removing whatever He sees fit to remove.

Part of spring cleaning is getting rid of clutter that is taking up space in your home that could otherwise be used for other purposes. In our walk with Christ, we have to get rid of some things that are cluttering up our time with Him if we want a fulfilling relationship with Jesus. Take a few moments today to get quiet before the Lord and allow Him to show you the clutter in your life that He wants you to remove. Allow Him to do a deep cleaning of your life and to get rid of anything that would hinder your walk with Him. Do your part to follow through with what He's asked you to do; then, you will have room in your heart and life for Him to fill you with good things.

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." Philippians 4:8

Bus Convention 2011

It was our privilege to get to attend Bus Convention in Camby, Indiana this year. It was our first time going to Bus Convention, and we certainly enjoyed it!! The sessions were very helpful and it gave us a fresh outlook on our ministry. We especially appreciated the ministry of Rev. James Plank who spoke in the morning devotionals and the evening services. It was a time of spiritual refreshing and filling up.

I wanted to wish my daddy a VERY Happy Birthday! He is the best dad anyone could every wish for. I have been truly blessed with the best of parents. My dad has always been there for me, even when I know it was inconvenient for him to be. He always puts his family first, (under God of course), and we know we are loved and mean the world to him. Thank you daddy for being a good example for your children to follow. You have led by example before us, and you live what you preach. Have a Point

Keep the application firmly in mind when creating the lesson and activities. Make sure the lesson teaches it, the memory verse reinforces it, the activities review it, and the children know it. Focus. Don't try to include everything related to the issue.
While the students are coloring or doing worksheets, just talk about the discussion points to see if they got it. This gives them a chance to ask application questions in a more conversational way.

We decided that rather than spend money on buying gifts for each other, we would spend the day together doing something fun. So, we spent our Valentine's Day at Virginia Beach enjoying the near 70 degree weather! What a treat for February! It was pretty windy, but that can be overlooked! :0) We ate dinner at Olive Garden and then walked through Williamsburg! Not many people live close enough to two tourist attractions like we do, so we try to take advantage of that while we are here!

Get them moving!

Incorporate movement into the activities as much as possible. Kids will move during class. It's much better to control that movement than to let it happen "their way". So alter typical class review activities to incorporate movement.

Here is an activity suggestion: Place a true sign on one wall and a false sign on another wall. The kids stand in the middle. If the statement is true, they stand by the true sign; if it's false, they go to the false sign.

Or have them play "hot potato" with a ball or some other object. When you stay stop, whoever has the object has to answer the question.

True Love

Since it's Valentine's Day, I most certainly could write a very mushy post...however, I won't put you all through that... :0) I do, however, want to write about what I believe is true love. In a world that is fast losing ( and maybe lost completely) its sense of morality and true love; I am blessed to be married to a man who first of all loves the Lord with all of his heart. It is because of that "first love" that he is then able to love me the way God has intended from the beginning. I believe that if we have not learned the meaning of true love from our Heavenly Father, who loved us so much He gave His very Sons' life's blood to save us; we are not able to love in the very truest sense of the meaning. Not many of us would be willing to sacrifice our only beloved child for the sake of someone who hated and despised us; but that is exactly what God did in sending His "only begotten Son" into this wicked world to die on a cruel cross for our sins. That, is TRUE LOVE. In that familiar, yet powerful verse from the Bible-John 3:16: "For God SO LOVED the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life", we see the message of TRUE LOVE.

We emphasis having our kids bring their Bibles to class, so let's put them to use. Pick out pertinent (and easy to read) verses from the lesson text for the students to take turns reading. If You Don't Know it, They Won't Learn it.

If you don't have a good handle on your lesson or topic that you are discussing, and don't know it forwards and backwards, it will show. This will cause the kids to lose interest in what you're saying because they will figure if you didn't care enough to study it, why should they care enough to learn it? That doesn't mean you have to be able to answer every off-topic question they ask. It's a great example to say, I'll have to look up the answer to that. But if it's part of the lesson you expect them to learn, you'd better know it.

Preserving our Holiness Heritage

Recently I have begun to realize what an incredible Holiness Heritage I have. I grew up with parents who not only loved me, and provided the essentials along with a lot of extras for me; but they made sure that I knew the most important things in life. They taught me values, morals, and Biblical principles. However, they didn't just teach those things to me, they lived them out before me on a daily basis. I have begun to realize that many of our teenagers that are growing up within our Holiness movement today are struggling because they haven't been taught the reasons for WHY we do what we do, or dress like we dress etc. The biggest reasons why they haven't been taught that is because their parents don't know either. How sad!! It is IMPERITIVE that we are not only mere followers in the Holiness way but that we are able to explain it. The Bible says in I Peter 3:15 "...and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear." We are to be able to explain to others what we believe. I would like to challenge you today, if you are reading this post, to get into the Word and discover the WHY'S of our Holiness Heritage. It isn't just a bunch of rules and regulations. There is Scripture to back it up, and the principles are there if we are willing and open before God. If we want to preserve our Holiness Heritage, we must first understand it and believe it ourselves.

I realize I have been negligent in my blog posting so far this year... It seems I have come up against a blogger's "writing block" recently so I apologize! :0) However, it's time to catch up with all our recent happenings...

At Home:
We have been busy with the usual stuff so far this year. Things are starting to speed up (not that they ever really slowed down but...) as we are revving up for the Spring and Summer rush. I finished getting our end of the tax stuff ready, and will be making an appointment soon to get that taken care of for the next year. Luke took advantage of the rare 50 degree weather, and got some pruning done on our rose bushes and irises. VBS plans are in full swing, and I am excited to get supplies I ordered through various places online. Tonight is Ladies Bible Study with the Ladies in our church.

At Church:
The Lord has been helping us and we have seen some encouraging signs recently. A new contact for our van route was established last week, and we are looking forward to what God may do through the van ministry. We are praying for a increase in growth for our congregation, both spiritually and in numbers. Looking forward to Spring Revival and what the Lord may do in our Church this year.

This past year, Christmas was to be at my parents. We rotate the holidays between our families every year, and so this year it was at my parents. While up there, we got to go to see my grandpa and be there with him for caroling and opening gifts. It was also the first time he got to see his newest great grandchild (who also is his namesake). Little Joey and Grandpa Joe got along just fine. :0) We also got to get a family picture with grandpa. We were missing two of our crew since Jeffrey had a cough, and we didn't want it to spread the germs around. However, it was a good Christmas and we realize once again how truly blessed we are.

A Western Christmas!

This year our Christmas program was a bit untraditional (anyone who knows me, is not overly surprised by this revelation). I wanted to do the Nativity story; however, I felt that it needed a new twist....so...the thought of a Western Christmas began to take form in my little peabrain. I had visions of Mary and Joseph in cowboy hats, Jean and bandannas in the backdrop of a stable with real straw; Shepherds, also in cowboy hats and bandannas, carrying sheep; Wisemen dressed likewise, but riding stick horses instead of camels; and the Heavenly Host....well...we only gave them bandannas and red belts... So, my vision soon became reality, and here you have our Western Christmas in full color! :0) A couple in our church decided we also needed to be "westernized", thus our western shirts etc... We told the same old, but wonderful story of our Savior's birth in a new way. We had a wonderful turnout and were so happy to see many of our van children's parents there!

Where is our focus?

There are many things that people look forward to and enjoy at Christmas time. There are the numerous Christmas cookies to bake, the beautiful lights and decorations to put up, the trimming of the Christmas tree, Christmas cards to send out, presents to buy, family gatherings...and the list could go on and on. You know the drill at Christmas time; we all rush around trying to get everything done on our many lists, and seemingly forget what all the celebrating is even about. Or more importantly, WHO all the celebrating is about... I know we've all heard this before too--Keep Jesus as the reason for the Season...but have we REALLY done that? In my own life, I know that a lot of my Christmas Season is taken up with preparing and planning for the Church Christmas program, Candlelight Service, Caroling, teen functions, and all these "legitimate" things... but even though they are "legitimate", and yes, even good things that need to be accomplished, we must keep our focus on WHY we are doing them. If my focus is strictly on doing all these "things" for our Church.... my focus is in the wrong place. It is difficult in the busyness of the Season to allow our focus to blur; but let's all (me definately included!) try to keep our focus on the ONE who truly deserves our praise and adoration. Jesus came to earth as a newborn baby nearly 2,000 years ago. Why? So that He could grow up experiencing life as we do with all of its heartache, temptations, joys, and triumphs; and ultimately to pay the price for our sins. He gave ALL for us. Let's give our ALL to Him this Christmas Season! He deserves above and beyond all that we could give Him!

The David Cope family was at our church for our fall revival this year. The Lord came in such a sweet way in our services. What a privilege it is to serve Him! The Cope family did a beautiful job of singing each night and Bro Cope brought challenging messages. The monday following revival we took them to Williamsburg for a day of fun and relaxation before they headed back home to the daily grind.

Pumpkin Cheesecake Squares

Here is another fall recipe I thought I would share with you all. I just made these this week for revival, and they seemed to be a huge hit! :0) Enjoy!

Pumpkin Cheesecake Squares
Base

1 cup Gold Medal® all-purpose flour
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 cup quick-cooking oats
1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts

Filling

1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
3/4 cup sugar
1 can (15 oz) pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
3 eggs

Topping

2 cups sour cream
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray. In medium bowl, mix flour and brown sugar. Using pastry blender (or two knives going in opposite directions), cut in butter until mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Stir in oats and walnuts. Press in bottom of pan; bake 15 minutes.
2. In large bowl, beat filling ingredients with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Pour over hot base. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until set and dry in center. Meanwhile, in small bowl, mix topping ingredients. Drop mixture by spoonfuls over pumpkin layer; spread evenly over hot filling. Bake about 5 minutes or until topping is set. Cool completely, about 2 hours. Cut into 4 rows by 4 rows. Store covered in refrigerator.

Birthday Wishes!

Today my Grandpa Hunt turns 88 years old! What an accomplishment! :0) I talked to him on the phone today, and we had a wonderful time laughing and talking together. Even though my grandpa is battling with Alzheimers disease, he still knows how to laugh and have fun! We have always had a special relationship, and would often find ourselves laughing together over anything and everything. As I reflect back on my grandpa's life, a lot of things come to mind. First and foremost however, is the fact that his Jesus was always (and still is) precious to him. Often, as he sang specials in church, he would have tears coursing down his cheeks as he sang about his Jesus.

Most men retire at a ripe old age of 65...not my grandpa! He worked until he was 80 or 81 years old... never a lazy bone in his body, and would hardly ever take a rest. There was always time for cookies, however... :0) He still enjoys treats now and then, whenever he gets them. (Runs in the family) :0)

My grandparents set a beautiful example of a godly lives and marriage before their daughter; and she then has passed that heritage on to her children. I am greatly blessed to have such a beautiful, sweet, and godly heritage! Even though now, my grandpa can't always remember things like he used to due to his Alzheimers, there is no doubt in my mind that he loves Jesus and will someday join my grandma at His feet! I love you grandpa!! Happy 88th Birthday! :0)

Fall Fellowship

This past saturday we had a fall get-together for our church people at our house. There was lots of food, fun and games, and wonderful fellowship! The kids got to have sack races (with pillowcases), pin the nose on the pumpkin, and bob for apples! One of the adults even got in on the bobbing for apples! :0) Isn't it wonderful to have good, clean, christian fun?! Who says Christians can't have fun?

Gooey S'mores Bars

If you're like me, you're always looking for some new yummy recipes to try!! Since fall is here now, this one is perfect for those cool nights when you want to kick back and relax with friends. I tried it just last night, and it turned out pretty good, so I thought I would share with you all! :0) Enjoy!

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

24 Graham crackers (12 double)
2 c mini marshmallows
6 oz (1 cup) semisweet choc chips
1 stick butter
1\2 c brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:

Spray 9x13 with Pam. Line pan with graham crackers- they may overlap slightly. Sprinkle with marshmallows; Sprinkle with choc chips. On low heat combine butter and brown sugar until dissolved. Take off burner and stir in the vanilla. Drizzle over top of the graham crackers, marshmallows and choc chips.

Bake 10-12 mins or until marshmallows are golden brown. (They took an extra 6 minutes to get really golden brown in my oven)

*It wouldn't hurt to add a few extra marshmallows and chocolate chips to the recipe if your serving a group of chocoholics! ;0)

Sunday marked the 3 year anniversary of my Grandma Hunt's passing. She went home to be with Jesus on September 5, 2007. I was always very close to my grandma... I have many good memories of her that I will forever treasure. It is never easy to lose a loved one...but we can have a peace that comes with the assurance that they are in Heaven with Jesus. While on earth, my grandma suffered with almost complete blindnes... What an awesome thought, that now she is seeing Jesus face-to-face!! She also went through a very tragic time in her life when her 9 year old son was burnt to death while she stood by helpless and unable to do anything for him... Now she is getting reaquainted with Joey and walking hand-in-hand with him on those beautiful golden streets!

We may never understand why God allows some of the things He does to come into our lives; but if my grandma were able to talk to us today, she would without a doubt say, "It IS worth it all when we see Jesus!".

As much as I loved and now miss my grandma, I would never want to bring her back... But my goal is, however, to meet her in Heaven someday!!

King William VBS

I know, I know...this is old news now...however, I thought I would still share a few pictures from our VBS here at King William. We had a really good week with a really good group of kids. Actually doubled our attendance from last year, so that was exciting!! ;0) We averaged 20 children this year. Each one is a blessing, and an opportunity to share the gospel with that child. We used the same theme here that we did all summer, however, here we built different props so that we wouldn't have to transport the big heavy props that we used elsewhere. The last night we invited the parents to join us at the parsonage for a picnic. We had almost 50 there that evening, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves in spite of the overwhelming heat! On sunday we had the program to present what the children learned throughout the week, and again had several parents join us. We never know what impact we can have on these precious children... It's SO IMPORTANT that they learn about Jesus at a young age!!

We did VBS for my home church up in Ohio again this year. Our theme was "The Gospel Express-All Aboard for Glory!". Our average for the week was somewhere around 40 kids, and they were excellent to work with! I used the Wordless Book as a base for my Bible lessons; and every day we had people try to get on the train by sneaking on, buying the wrong ticket etc.... The kids really got into that! :0) I used "A Miracle for Samuelito" for my continued story here to go along with the Wordless Book idea.

Last week my parents were able to get away for a few days (kind of the calm before the storm type thing....) and come down here for a visit! We had such a blast! :0) We were able to visit Virginia Beach (found a perfect spot that is nearly all to yourself!!!! ;0) ) and we also took them to Bass Pro Shops! We really enjoyed our time together, but as always, it was WAY TOO SHORT!! Oh well... we're trying to be content with the little visits we do get together... We both needed the little break from the rush and busyness of life, and so it was the perfect retreat...

Visit With Grandpa

While we were up north with my family, we got to go visit my grandpa Hunt. He is in the Apastolic Christian Home where they can care for him properly in his present state. He has always been special to me, and even though he may not really know who I am when I go and see him, we always have a good time! We laugh together, and enjoy visiting together... This last time we went, we got to get some pictures with him when we took him on a "walk" around the complex. Love you Grandpa! :0)

Yesterday, June 27th, was my parents (Jeral & Ruth Davis) 35th wedding anniversary! I am so thankful to have such wonderful parents who have been such a awesome example of a Godly marriage! They have showed us, their children, how truly wonderful a relationship can be when you put God first and allow HIM to be the center of your relationship... Thank you mom and dad for being such a beautiful example!! Love you bunches!! Congratulations!

While I was up North this time doing a VBS at my home church, we decided to take a morning and go to one of our favorite places--well, the girls in the family anyways... :0) Me, mom, my sister Jen, niece Jessica, Aunt Karen, Cousins kari, Karibeth, Kasi, and Kayleigh met up at a tea room near Portage Lakes for a afternoon tea. The girls got to play dress-up while they waited for their lunch to come. We had a really fun time! Before we met up at the tea room though, me, mom, Jen & Jessica took some pictures out on the dock of Portage Lakes.... It's always fun making memories!! :0)

My husband's family has been kayaking for some time now...however, I have never attempted it because I don't know how to swim. However, they persuaded me to try it...and now I'm hooked! ;0) I wore a life jacket of course, but thankfully didn't have to 'test' it to see if it really would work! :0) We really did have a blast though, and I can't wait til I get to do it again! I finally have found my favorite sport!

Remembering a Saint...

Recently our Church family lost a very special member... Sis Esther Sutley was a precious saint, and a very special part of our congregation. Although we will miss her, we know that she is rejoicing in Heaven with Jesus! Her family was singing "We're Marching to Zion" when she slipped from this world into the arms of Jesus. What a glorious Home-Going! What a wonderful example of Holiness she was!

Two Years....and still in Love!

Two years ago today we pledged the rest of our lives to each other... What an exciting day that was!!!! Now, two years later we are even more in love, and even more thrilled to spend the rest of our lives together! It has been an exciting and thrilling two years, and the Lord has blessed us over and over. Usually we are the ones who do the travelling and visiting with our family. It's a rare occasion when our family gets to come visit us! But this past weekend my husband's mom and dad got to come down for a long weekend visit. We took them to a few of the "local" sights since they don't get down here very often. Williamsburg, of course, is always one that everyone wants to go see! :0) So we spent a day in that area seeing the sights and enjoying the unexpected beautiful weather. We also got to take them to the Crystal Concert in Colonial Williamsburg to hear Dean S (I'm not going to try to spell his last name...) play his glass instruments. We also visited the Yankee Candle Outlet in Williamsburg area as well.... much to my father-in-laws chagrin... ;0)

Corbin's Visit from Ghana Africa

Jason, Becky and Joel Corbin were at our church for a deputation service on Sunday night. They spent the night with us, and so the next day they had some time, so we were hoping to take them somewhere for a day of fun...however, it dawned a rainy, yucky day, so we had to change our plans a little... We decided on going to Bass Pro Shop since Joel was hoping for a Cabela's and that was the closest we had around here! :0) Plus, my husband and I had never been there, and we figured it was the perfect solution to our rainy day! We really enjoyed our afternoon with them there and Joel had a blast looking at all the neat things, and getting to "shoot" some targets upstairs! (It was laser type guns) All in all, it turned out perfect, and everyone seemed to have a really good time!

Happy Mother's Day!

I realize that Mother's Day was yesterday, however, I didn't think it would hurt anything to post my Mother's Day post today... :0) I have a very special lady in my life that I affectionately call "mom"...she has been there for me through all the bumps and scrapes of life, and somehow still managed to love me unconditionally. We are best of friends; and for those of you who know us well, you know that we are almost EXACTLY alike! ;0) Even now that I'm "all grown up", my mom is someone who I call often for advice and just to talk... I love you mom! You are the best!!

Spring Revival

For our Spring Revival this year we had Brian and Sherri Spangler. We had a wonderful week with them in our home; however, the best part of the week was God's presence felt in each of the services. It was just a wonderful week with such refreshing services! While they were here we took them to Williamsburg and showed them around, which they really enjoyed.

IHC Trip

My husband and I were able to go to IHC this year for the first time since we had been there with our College Choirs. It was a good week, and the Lord really came in the last service in a special way.

Easter Sunday

On Easter Sunday our children had a mini-program. They sang some Easter songs and then played a song on the bells. They did a really good job and everyone enjoyed it. We were thankful for the good group of visitors that were there on that Sunday as well! We also have a "program" at our Church where the children can receive a Bible from the Church with their name on it if they come 6 sundays in a row. Well, Nicholas, one of our newer junior church children received his Bible on Easter Sunday. We are so glad to have each one of our children, and pray that God will speak to their little hearts.

Catch Up!

I know it's been forever since I've posted on here, but I just have been really busy! :0) However, I do want to update everyone on how the Lord is helping us here at King William. There have been many challenges and yes, even disappointments that have come our way; but God has not forsaken us! We had a wonderful crowd for Easter sunday and were so excited to see new faces! Some of our new van children had their families there, and that is always a blessing to see! We have some very important special prayer requests that we would like for you all to help us pray about. I can't give any details, but the Lord knows all about each issue, and is able to take care of it the way He sees fit! We are happy serving Jesus, and are excited to see how He is going to work on our behalf! This is HIS Church, and HIS people. He knows best how to take care of them! :0)
In other news, last week we went to Ministerial Institute up in Canton, Ohio. We enjoyed staying with my mom while there. My dad was in Belize at the time, so unfortunatly we didn't get to see him. The speakers at the Ministerial this year were Bro. Grile, and Bro and Sis Kratz. On wednesday and thursday for the afternoon session, they split the pastor's and their wives up into two different groups. Bro Grile spoke to the preachers, and Sis Kratz spoke to the preacher's wives.
We have a fairly full next couple weeks with IHC, a visit from our conference president and his wife (Rev and Mrs Cope), and revival with Rev and Mrs Brian Spangler following directly on the heels of one another! :0) I will try to post pictures and news updates for each event but we will see if that happens! ;0)
